This 400th anniversary campaign, carried out throughout 2013, is finished. The work to honor treaties with Native Nations and protect the Earth continues. Two Row Seeks Financial Support

CelebrateCanoersSmall
We write with an update on the tremendous progress underway to renew the Two Row Wampum and to seek your support as we enter the final months of preparation for our epic paddling trip down the Hudson River this summer. The strong response we have received from thousands of people and scores of organizations has lifted our spirits as we’ve worked so hard over the past year and a half on this historic effort to mark the 400th anniversary of the first treaty between the Haudenosaunee and Europeans.

The Two Row Wampum Renewal Campaign is not primarily about commemorating history, but rather about renewing the inspirational vision for peaceful co-existence embodied in the wampum belt. We seek to polish the Covenant Chain of Friendship which has suffered through centuries of neglect and to build support for the non-native side of the agreement to live up to its commitments.

Our campaign will raise awareness of and build support networks to address two interrelated issues: the devastation experienced by the Haudenosaunee and other native nations as part of centuries-long efforts to destroy/assimilate them and the related environmental damage in New York State and around the globe. Our ultimate aim is to achieve social and economic justice for the Haudenosaunee and all Indigenous Peoples as well as environmental justice for all of us.

Momentum continues to build. There are over 85 educational institutions, community organizations, environmental and social justice groups and faith communities that have signed on as co-sponsors for the Two Row Campaign. As we travel down the Hudson this summer (see the enclosed map and schedule), the group will include paddlers from all six Haudenosaunee nations and people from at least 20 other indigenous nations, along with non-native allies from far and wide.

However, we remain short of raising all the funds needed for the large ground crew and vehicles to support paddler safety, provide food, pay for camping sites when needed, staff radio communication, organize the infrastructure for educational and cultural events at each stop, transport paddlers and canoes from the New York City back to Albany and to support the organizational infrastructure necessary to carry it all out.

We hope you’ll give generously, joining the hundreds of others and scores of organizations which are supporting the campaign. Please consider other ways that you might participate as well. Would you like to join the ground support crew? Do you have canoes or kayaks that can be made available for the trip? Can you pass this appeal on to your friends and relatives? Would you like to join a working committee in Central NY, the Capital District, the Hudson Valley or New York City, or to form one elsewhere?

There are many other exciting developments in the campaign. Find us on social media and check out our website: www.HonorTheTwoRow.org for full details.

We launched this project at the Onondaga Longhouse nearly a year and a half ago. Since then the vision has only grown and deepened as so many of you have added your voices and spirits to the effort.

Thanks so much for your work to honor treaties between Indigenous peoples and settler governments and in doing so, to protect the Earth on which all life depends.

In Peace,

Allison Smith, Andy Mager, April Tarbell, Aya Yamamoto, Buffy Curtis, Curtis Waterman, Dan Hill, Emily Bishop, Hickory Edwards, Jack Manno, Kelly Edwards, Lena Duby, Lindsay Speer, Liseli Haines, Ron Van Norstrand, Shirley Hill, Terry Eckert
